Bulletin 2 June 2024

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

What we see on the altar is Body and Blood of Christ : God is present in the piece of bread we take in our hand at communion. This we believe. How can this be ? “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Sacrament : sacraments show a particular reality but we understand another reality. We see the appearance of bread – lab analysis would reveal all the properties of bread. Yet we understand that this is the body of Christ. Symbol : flag, jersey – represents a reality but is not itself that reality Sacrament : the symbol is the reality that it represents the bread becomes a spiritual reality through the Eucharistic prayer and the action of the Holy Spirit : anamnesis and epiclesis The reality present is the death and resurrection of Christ “Do this in memory of me” : Memory makes present Memory ordinarily recalls a past event : joyful, painful feelings may be aroused, but the past event remains in the past. Memory in Jewish sense : the event is present when it is remembered = being at Mass is same at being at Last Supper, on Hill of Calvary or in Garden of Resurrection
