Fourth Sunday of Easter.  Good Shepherd Sunday/Vocations Sunday

Confirmation Ceremony last Monday

Congratulations to the forty five children from Bunscoil Chriost Ri who received the sacrament of Confirmation last Monday. We congratulate them and their parents and hope that the occasion will mark a renewal of the Christian life for all the family. We thank their teachers for preparing the children: Mr Kevin O’Donoghue and Ms Niamh Byrne. Bishop Patrick Harrington, who administered the sacrament, led a truly remarkable ceremony. His wisdom and conviction, revealed in his homily and in the manner in which he confirmed the children, was an inspiration to us all.

Vocations Sunday: Extract from a homily by Dr Dermot Farrell, Archbishop of Dublin

One of the great blessings of Pope Francis’ ministry has been a renewed appreciation of the role of laity in continuing the mission of Jesus, the one who was prepared to “lay down his life for [the] sheep”, as today’s Gospel so beautifully expresses it. In our parishes today, through those involved in Parish Councils, Finance Committees, Liturgy groups, ministers of Word and Sacrament, and those in so many voluntary roles, the Holy Spirit continues to pour out gifts for the arrival of God’s Kingdom… In all this, the challenge is to live out our Baptism, to appeal to younger generations, rather than exhausting ourselves in the attempt to preserve structures inherited from another time, which no longer meet the needs of faith communities today.

But has this renewed appreciation of the role of the laity perhaps unintentionally rendered the true role of priest invisible? This is a big question for everyone in the Church in the developed world…It is not primarily a question of numbers, but it is principally a question of priests with the energy and strength and rooted in today’s [society] who can fulfil their role as leaders of their communities and permitting the voice of the Shepherd to be heard…Today, many of the priests, with evident generosity of spirit, continue to minister despite reaching the age of retirement.

On this Vocations Sunday we renew our need for the ministerial priesthood and we pray that young people will respond with courage to the call of the Lord: Feed my lambs; feed my sheep.

First Wednesday of the Month: Rosary and Miraculous Medal Novena prayers at 10.00 am on Wednesday led by the Legion of Mary members. All welcome.
