28th April 2019 – 2nd Sunday Easter (C)

RESURRECTION
Jesus’ first word to his disciples is “peace.”  The disciples are filled with, and we long to experience that joy in our lives.  The purpose of all preaching is set out in this gospel passage, that we will know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that we will have life through his name.

Jesus is the first and the last, the living one.  He sends the disciples, and sends us, on the same mission on which he was sent by the Father, to make known to his people their salvation through forgiveness of all their sins, the loving kindness of the heart of our God who visits us like the dawn from on high.  The Lord says to us: receive the Holy Spirit, who will give us courage to acknowledge Christ and to proclaim the Gospel by our lives.  When we come to Mass, we encounter Jesus and as we experience communion with him he says to us: my peace I give you.  With Thomas we respond, my Lord and my God.

This mission gives us an opportunity to pray, reflect and discuss together how we can be faithful followers of Christ in the new reality of twenty-first century Ireland.

Turners Cross is a vibrant parish, with many people involved in an impressive list of parish activities, but we share the challenges facing the Church in Ireland as a whole. These include decline in Mass attendance, decline in faith, in a culture with more and more signs of indifference and hostility, and the scandals in the Church have given rise to difficulties and doubts experienced by many good people.

If we ignore the problems and do nothing, then nothing will happen, and the slow decline will continue. The theme of our Mission is Parish Renewal, and in the open forum setting at the final session, parishioners will be invited to offer ideas for a Parish Pastoral Plan.
