5th October 2014 – 27th Sunday Ordinary Time (A)

synod-of-bishops_1KNG-IkT9The Synod: Pope Francis has called what is known as an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops from around the World and some married couples. The Synod runs from this Sunday until 19th October.  You will remember the questionnaire that we gave out last year seeking your views on the issues facing families from a faith point of view.  The Cardinal Secretary of the Synod  has said the questionnaire sent by the Vatican to dioceses around the world asking your views on family life and the Church was mostly greeted with “enthusiasm”.  Informed by the feedback  the members of the Synod will discuss issues such as  divorce, contraception, same sex marriage etc.  Part of the discussion will be whether people in a second marriage should be admitted to the Sacraments.    This year’s Synod will be confined to studying these issues.  The next Synod in a years time will make decisions on the topics. We must find a way of genuinely renewing our faith, to me this is the core question of the Synod.    At our meeting with Pope Francis recently He said  “pray for the success of the Synod and pray for me.”   Let us do that.
Holy Family of Nazareth,  may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family and its beauty in God’s plan.   Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.  Bless and guide Pope Francis. Amen.
