9th December 2012 – 2nd Sunday of Advent (C)

Lighting the 2nd Candle of Wreath:
Lord God, you chose John the Baptist to prepare your people for the  coming of the Saviour.
He greeted Jesus, the Lamb of God, and showed the world its Redeemer.
As we prepare for Christmas help us to straighten out our lives.
With your grace may we renew our hearts,  overcome our sins and give greater welcome to Jesus who is among us.  We make this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

CHRISTMAS ATTITUDES
Anticipating the coming of Jesus, John the Baptist cried “prepare the way of the Lord.”  As we prepare a way for the Lord in our lives, we may reflect on what our attitudes to Christmas and indeed to life should be.  John preached repentance, a changing of attitudes from selfishness to generosity.  Our Advent preparation should include striving for honesty and integrity. God comes to make a change for the better, to rescue us from sin, fear, unhappiness and death.  And the Baptist tells us: “be content.”  An attitude of contentment may not be in tune with our consumerist society, but it does bring happiness and the freedom to enjoy what we have. Jesus tells us that life is more than food and clothes, more than material goods. We pray for an attitude of acceptance of God’s salvation, of the message of Christ, so that our prayer may be from a thankful heart, grateful and gracious.  We pray for Christmas joy and peace, and that the peace of God will renew our attitudes and guard our hearts.

Pastoral Letter from Bishop John Buckley on the Right to Life.

Copies are available in the Church at all masses and will be available from the Sacristy during the week.
