The Kingdom
The standards of the kingdom of God are not those of the world. As Jesus puts his arms around the little children in todays gospel reading, he tells his disciples that it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs, those with no pretensions, those happy to have a loving, dependent relationship with God. His teaching on divorce disturbs his hearers, and does not sit well with the prevailing attitudes of our society. A marriage breakdown involves disappointment, hurt and suffering and we have sympathy for all concerned. When we oppose divorce in principle, we are not saying, for example, that people should stay together for the sake of the children, but that every effort should be made to restore the marriage to a good state, for the sake of everybody concerned.
Day for Life 2012
Today is the Day for Life 2012, dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage. The theme for this year is Choose Life. Bishops Pastoral and Prayer card available at back of Church
The Year of Faith begins on October 11th, the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and ends on November 24th 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King. We hope that the year will encourage us to profess our faith with confidence. The Pope suggests that we must not forget very many good people who do not have the gift of faith, who are sincerely searching for meaning and truth in their lives and in creation. The parish assembly is developing events and programmes for the year and suggestions from parishioners will be most welcome. We will mark the start of the Year of Faith at our Masses next weekend.
