May 4th 2008 – Feast of The Ascension of The Lord

The Ascension
In the Church's liturgical year the Ascension falls forty days after the Resurrection and ten days before Pentecost. The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven is the completion of the Paschal Mystery. Jesus shows us that where he has gone, we are to follow. Before his departure Jesus had some final messages for his apostles."I will go and prepare a place for you. I am with you always. The Holy Spirit will come.Go teach all nations"These final messages of Jesus, before his Ascension were both comforting and challenging for his apostles, and are the same now for all who choose to follow Him.
Congratulations and God's blessing on our First Communion children and their families as they prepare for their First Holy Communion. May they frequently come to the Table of the Lord to be nourished and strengthened by Jesus the Bread of Life.

Pastoral Services Collection May 10th/11th
Bishop Buckley invites people of the diocese to continue to help fund the programmes promoting lay involvement in the parishes. The special collection for Parish Pastoral Services will be taken up in all churches in the diocese on the weekend of May 10th/11th, 2008.
The annual collection will help meet the costs of developing and supporting lay involvement in parishes. It helps fund the work of the Pastoral Development Office by meeting some of the running costs as well as salaries for personnel.
The services provided to parishes include establishing, training, and supporting parish councils, parish assemblies and their working groups. Ongoing formation and resources are also provided for these groups. The office is also supporting the planning work involved in establishing pastoral areas in the diocese.
Fr. Tom Hayes, Director of Pastoral Planning, said that last year’s collection came to €86,000.
“That is a mark of the generous support by parishioners and clergy for the essential work which is being funded by this collection,” he said. “This work will continue to be essential in the future plans for the diocese and parishes as we work together to build up the faith community in a changing environment.”
