September 19th 2004 – 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Who Do We Follow
Twenty-five years ago when Pope John Paul II honoured us with his presence, many I’m sure remember where they went to see him, Dublin, Galway, Limerick.
I remember well standing in Patrick St. at one in the morning waiting for the buses to return from Dublin to take us to Galway. Travelling through the night we eventually made Galway at 6.30 am.
And then it happened: the helicopter appeared in the sky and he was here. The excitement was incredible. By some stroke of luck I got lost and was standing behind railings, when suddenly the pope-mobile arrived and there, no more than eight feet away, Pope John Paul got out. The sight of him was incredible. I can still see him twenty-five years on.
We have all changed in the last twenty-five years and so has our world. But the stewardship of the Pope has not. He still tells us to ‘Listen’ to the opening word from our first reading, ‘Listen to Christ’. He still  points out to us the urgency of which god we choose to follow, money or the one true God. One cannot choose both.

One of their patron saints is St. Lorenzo Ruiz whose feast is celebrated at the end of September. Next Sunday 26th Sept. we invite all Philippinos to our 10.30 am Mass which will be offered for their intentions and their families at home in the Philippines.

Special Mass to mark Cork & Ross Mission to South America
The Diocese of Cork & Ross will celebrate its unique missionary links with South America with a special Mass on this Thurs. Sept. 23rd at 7.30 pm in the Cathedral, Cork.
The Diocese has recently ended its clerical presence in South America – which began in 1965 with the founding of the Mission to Peru. A sister Mission in Ecuador was opened in 1992 for 10 years.
The Mass will be attended by civic and religious dignitaries and will focus heavily on the contribution of the people of the Diocese who sustained the Mission over the years. All are invited to attend.
