August 24th 2003 – 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Going somewhere
Some left angrily, noisily: it may have been the hard sayings on divorce, chastity, fidelity, justice. In other cases people just went – no particularreason or grief. Was it the parish, some issue, personality clash with thepriest – or just tiredness?
While the one who is missing is missed -what about you who read this? Your faithfulness is noted. You did not leave because of hard sayings, or troubled times in and out of the church. In an age of straight talk, you are a rock in shifting sands and choices.
Loyalty and faithfulness are the core of the readings for this weekend. Joshua gathers the tribes and challenges their loyalty to God (first reading). Paul brings the relationship closer to home in how we relate toeach other. His words may sound a bit quaint and hard to accept at times, but his core message urging loyalty and love are eternal. The story is told of a king who hosted a feast for his kingdom.
Each family was to provide one bottle of the best wine for the banquet. When the King poured the first cup from the royal vat – he looked into clear pure water. It seems that everybody in the kingdom thought their little bottle of water would not matter in the vat of wine.
Your part matters! Your faithfulness counts.
