March 9th 2003 – 1st Sunday of Lent

Food for Thought
At the soup-run in the city centre, people gather and share food and companionship, some live and sleep in the doorways and on park benches, oblivious to the weather. Some are hungry; some have eaten well. Many are ill. All are lonely. All want contact with other human beings. The food itself is not so important; it is the excuse for approaching one another; it is the meeting point between people and, in the sharing of a sandwich, they celebrate; they give thanks for each other.
It never ceases to amaze passers-by,  how the homeless share what they have — a sandwich, a drink, a cigarette, a blanket, a cardboard box. If only the rest of us did the same.
“If you give your bread to the hungry, you will rise in the darkness.”
Action: Listen to someone’s story without telling your own.
Prayer: Help me, Lord, even just once in my life, to be able to give my love to someone in the greatest need of it.
