You’re Invited
‘Come’ seems to be God’s favourite word: Come to the wedding feast. Come, let us talk about these things. Come follow me. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Today Jesus adds: ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened.’
God invites, God calls, God opens the door and waves his hand, pointing pilgrims to a full table. I wonder how he feels about all those rejected invitations and us who reject? We know from our own experience how we’d feel.
He didn’t say ‘Do this’ or ‘Don’t do that’ but – ‘Come to me.’ If we do come, our real life will be brought into harmony with our real desires. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything.
And if we haven’t ‘come’, then we have surely ‘gone’ – but to where? Most likely to a listless, ‘half dead while still alive’ kind of existence. It’s not that we reject invitations, sometimes we stall or don’t respond. But there are some things that won’t wait. So, while we can’t choose when and where we were born, or how people respond to us, we can choose where we spend eternity.
Time’s up – what’s your answer?

Questions people ask
Q. Has the obligation to go to Mass on Sunday been lifted? Is it still a sin to miss Sunday Mass?
A. To quote the Catechism of the Catholic Church: ‘The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist unless excused for a serious reason. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.’ People who appreciate the Eucharist do not need laws of obligation. Fr. Silvester O’Flynn OFM Cap
