View of Roof apex and supporting structure. Also visible is a pair of pulleys originally used to suspend the sanctuary light. The sanctuary light itself was suspended on 6 cords, which joined a single cross beam inside the attic. Two steel cables ran from this beam over the pulleys and onto a counterweight. As the light was raised and lowered, the pulley mechanism and counterweight would serve to balance the movement while completely concealing the mechanism from view below.
The light was removed in the 1960's and its whereabouts are unknown. It remains the only aspect of the original design that was not restored. |
